Interesting title and an interesting subject, well, partially. The song recordings were the good part, although I would have loved tio hear more of the wax cylinder recordings in the real quality, the only playtime at the end felt rather faked unfortunately (tip: Go to Nortorf and visit the "Schallplattenmuseum" there, they have the old machines and pre-Grammophone gadgets - if you are lucky you will get a presentation - I enoyed that so much, I may go again!).
The other slightly interesting bit was the theme of leaving and missing opportunities, like the loss of the mother in absence for example...
But then was the love affair, it felt staged to me not really happening in some way, maybe that was part of the theme mentioned above, I don't know. And the slowness and the felt length was nerve-wrecking but led to the best joke of the film, when the endtitles read "based on a short story"
All in all a lot ao waste, so I ended up with a generous 3...
